The Ministry of Civil Aviation has denied recent claims that passenger data from the Digi Yatra app is being used to track down tax evaders. In a statement shared on X, the ministry described the media reports as “unfounded and inaccurate.”
No Sharing of Data with Tax Authorities
The clarification comes after a news report alleged that the tax department had access to Digi Yatra data. The report claimed this data was being cross-checked against tax filings to identify income discrepancies, with plans for the Income Tax department to issue notices to evaders in 2025.
The Ministry of Civil Aviation stressed, “There is no sharing of Digi Yatra passengers’ data with Indian tax authorities.” They further explained that the Digi Yatra app uses a Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI) model, meaning personally identifiable information (PII) and travel credentials are stored only on the user’s device, not on a central server.
Commitment to Data Privacy and Security
The ministry also assured the public, saying, “If a user uninstalls the Digi Yatra app, all data is deleted entirely. Airport systems automatically purge passenger data within 24 hours of the flight’s departure.” They also pointed out that Digi Yatra is specifically designed for domestic passengers and does not apply to international travelers.
Both Digi Yatra and the Income Tax department have refuted the claims. The Digi Yatra official account thanked the Income Tax department for addressing the misinformation.
Digi Yatra, which uses Facial Recognition Technology (FRT), enables a seamless, contactless airport experience. Passengers must register on the Digi Yatra app using Aadhaar-based validation and a self-image capture. After registering, the boarding pass is scanned, and credentials are shared with the airport for smooth processing.
